Spanish is not simply something that I teach; it is an essential part of who I am. My parents are from El Salvador, and I grew up in a home where Spanish, culture, and tradition were intentionally passed down from one generation to the next. That experience shapes the way I teach.

Through Con Gusto Spanish Tutoring, students learn much more than vocabulary and grammar. They are invited into the living cultures of the Spanish-speaking world with music, storytelling, traditions, and meaningful conversation. My goal is to help students develop not only strong language skills, but also curiosity, respect, and joy in the learning process.

I strive to create a learning environment where students feel seen, encouraged, and excited to grow. When students feel safe to take risks and express themselves, language learning becomes something they do con gusto, with enthusiasm and joy.

I am based in North Bethesda and provide tutoring services throughout the DMV.

My goal is to help students move beyond memorizing vocabulary and instead develop the ability to communicate meaningfully in Spanish. Through structured lessons and engaging activities, students build strong foundations in grammar, vocabulary, listening, reading, and speaking while gaining a deeper appreciation for Spanish-speaking cultures.

My teaching emphasizes a communicative approach, meaning students actively use Spanish through conversation, listening, reading, and interactive activities. Whenever possible, I conduct sessions primarily in Spanish to help students build confidence and natural fluency.

At the heart of my work is a simple goal: helping students discover that learning Spanish can be engaging, meaningful, and something they truly enjoy doing con gusto — with enthusiasm and joy. I look forward to meeting you soon for a tutoring session.

Learn More About Agustin “Gus”

I am a native Spanish speaker with a B.A. in Spanish from Dickinson College and have five years of classroom teaching experience, along with five years of private tutoring. I currently work with students in grades 2–12, supporting learners at a wide range of developmental levels.

Outside the classroom, I’m also a proud dad to two fully bilingual boys (ages 2 and 4), whom my wife and I have been raising in Spanish since birth. Language, culture, and family are deeply connected for me, and that connection influences the way I teach and support my students.

When I’m not teaching, I enjoy spending time outdoors. I’m an avid backpacker and fly fisherman, and in 2017, I completed a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. After finishing the trail, I realized I wanted my work to have a deeper sense of purpose. Teaching and tutoring Spanish gave me that purpose, the opportunity to share my language, culture, and identity with students in a meaningful way.
